1959 Buick Invicta Drawing

For Inktober day 29, I did the line work for this 1959 Buick Invicta drawing. The prompt word was “shoes,” which wasn’t immediately clear for a car, but I ultimately went with Kindig It Design’s Blue Suede Shoes Invicta. This week, I decided to go ahead and give it some tones.

I started the sketch on the 29th with a rough pencil sketch, and then re-lined with Micron pens. First, I laid down 005, and added in 03 to give some perspective. For example, the bumpers appear to pop out from the paper because of a phenomenon called atmospheric perspective. This simply means that your eyes perceive darker and lighter tones as being closer, and more faded, duller tones as further away. Also, your eyes perceive lines around objects even when they don’t actually exist.

Next, I shaded the car with five different Copic marker blue tones, which I think gives it a nearly iridescent appearance. The white reflections in the body are white charcoal pencil blended with a paper towel. I used a variety of grays to finish the brightwork and wheels. Finally, I used a neon orange colored pencil to outline the car.

It’s difficult to capture the vibrancy of the orange in pictures or scans, but it lends a dramatic contrast to the blue in the body.

One final note – I’ve decided to change my signature in my drawings. Rather than signing my drawings with my traditional “AK,” I’ve decided that my drawing signatures should match my art outfit name, so starting with this drawing, I’ll now sign with “Aaron Thomas” and the year.
