Another Packard Drawing

Another Packard Drawing

I liked the way last week’s Packard drawing turned out – that one was biased toward the rear. This week I made another Packard drawing – Another 1950 Packard Super Eight – but biased toward the front.

Packard Scan

I started with a basic pencil sketch on toned gray paper. This car is nearly 9″ in length.

Next, I retraced with Micron 02. I modified this car a little: the car is significantly lower, the rear tires are wide and mounted on Weld Prostar wheels. The front tires are white walls mounted on Rocket Racing Igniter wheels.

Packard Micron

Next, I added depth to the sketch with Micron 05 and 08.

The line work was done at this point, so I started in on the black block shading using Micron pens and Sharpie Markers. The chrome really started to pop out here. Just to give some separation, I colored the front wheel in with Copic grays.

Packard Shade

Here, I could have colored the body in with any color, but I chose to use black again. It gives a cool contrasting depth.

Finally, I filled in the reflections with Posca white to give the deep contrast.

I like to leave the bottom third paper-color to give another element of depth. I think it makes the body look extra reflective.

After I was completely done, I realized I forgot the rear wheel skirts, which is one of my favorite elements of this design. I suppose on a hot rodded version it would make more sense to leave them off for ease of access.

This perspective highlights the Art Deco styling accentuated in the grille, fenders, and hood ornament. It’s uncommon to see these cars customized, so it’s fun to do something a little different.
