Christine
I’m a sucker for movies and TV shows with iconic cars that become characters. Some of the most famous ones are the General Lee in the Dukes of Hazzard, and KITT in Knight Rider – these shows just wouldn’t hold up without the cars. A different twist on this is the 1983 horror flick, Christine.
Christine was written by Stephen King and directed by horror legend John Carpenter. The basic premise is that dorky uncool high schooler Arnie Cunningham finds an old ’58 Plymouth for sale and restores it to this cherry red and white Fury, but the car has a mind of its own and kills people for sport. Christine brain washes Arnie, he becomes cool but aggressive and together they exact vengeance on all the bullies.
I loved this movie growing up because the car has such attitude – the grille is aggressive, the darkened windows are mysterious, and the bright red paint is ostentatious. This car was first drawn in pencil on toned gray paper, and then line work was completed with various Micron pen weights. Next, I filled in the paint work with four shades of Copic reds. A variety of grays were used for the chrome, and finally the white reflections were made using white charcoal and Posca white.
