Paper Matters!

I tried sketching this 1966 Plymouth Valiant on course sketching paper, but the porosity and sponginess of the paper caused me to not get any ink out for the lighter shading. The shading is super thick. So, I tried sketching the same car again on 8.5×11 printer paper and got a much better response from…

Merry Christmas, Sean!

This was a fun Christmas project for my friend MaryRose for her boyfriend Sean – a 2003 Dodge Neon and a 2017 Chrysler 200. Both cars were drawn with the same progression – rough outlining in pencil, then tonal value added with Copic grays, and line work done with Micron pen. Posca white was used…

1940 Ford

I’ve been thinking a lot about traditional hot rods lately. One of the coolest is the late pre-war Ford. This 1940 Ford was first sketched out on toned tan paper with pencil, then filled in with copic grays. Charcoal white was used for outlining and the whitewalls. Finally, Micron pen was used for details.

Inktober 2019, Month in Review

This was my first Inktober, and it was certainly full of ups and downs (mostly ups). I was excited to start as we were just entering October, and I had a lot of fun all month long but it had me pretty worn down by the end. The whole point of Inktober is to challenge…

Herbie the Love Bug

Today’s Inktober prompt is “Misfit,” which makes me think of a very unconventional race car, Herbie the Love Bug. I chose to make this drawing on Toned Tan paper to get the white reflections and side numbers to pop. I started with just pencil outlines and filled it in with Copic markers. I really like…

Inktober Week #2

Week #2 was a blast and is now a wrap! Here’s a look at this week’s prompts. Day #7 was “Enchanted,” which made me think of the enchanted Ford Anglia from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This sketch was a bit of a risk because of the perspective – it’s shot from below…

American Graffiti ’32 Ford

While I’m on a movie car kick, how about the beautiful ’32 Ford Deuce Coupe from American Graffiti… George Lucas helped to return hot rods to the streets and revitalize the culture with the 1973 cult classic. Here’s the start – rough outline and first shades of Copic yellows: Then, filling in some details with…

Darkwing, By Special Request…

I was very excited to see that two drawings had sold this week – the Mystery Machine Hot Rod Van and the Tony Stark ’32 Ford. So, by special request, I made this Darkwing Duck ’62 VW Sambabus. Here’s the bus in rough-sketch: I decided to work on the lettering and character next – these…
