Magazine Sketches

I have a ton of old car magazines in the basement and I thought it would be fun to start a series where I pick my favorite from one and sketch it. This is my favorite from the October 2011 Hot Rod – a Willys gasser. This sketch was done using a Uni-Ball Onyx Micro…

Paper Matters!

I tried sketching this 1966 Plymouth Valiant on course sketching paper, but the porosity and sponginess of the paper caused me to not get any ink out for the lighter shading. The shading is super thick. So, I tried sketching the same car again on 8.5×11 printer paper and got a much better response from…

This Week’s Musings – Christmas COE & Bronco

I’ve made a couple sketches this week, both without marker. Here’s a Christmas 1939 Ford COE hauling a Christmas Tree. This sketch is done using Micron 005 on marker paper. This is a first-gen Ford Bronco sketched out using only #2 pencil on marker paper. I really like this forced perspective from the ground up…

1940 Ford

I’ve been thinking a lot about traditional hot rods lately. One of the coolest is the late pre-war Ford. This 1940 Ford was first sketched out on toned tan paper with pencil, then filled in with copic grays. Charcoal white was used for outlining and the whitewalls. Finally, Micron pen was used for details.

Inktober 2019, Month in Review

This was my first Inktober, and it was certainly full of ups and downs (mostly ups). I was excited to start as we were just entering October, and I had a lot of fun all month long but it had me pretty worn down by the end. The whole point of Inktober is to challenge…

Inktober Week #2

Week #2 was a blast and is now a wrap! Here’s a look at this week’s prompts. Day #7 was “Enchanted,” which made me think of the enchanted Ford Anglia from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. This sketch was a bit of a risk because of the perspective – it’s shot from below…

Inktober 2019, Week 1

I thought I’d participate in “Inktober” this year, a collective event where artists challenge themselves to draw one picture each day in the month of October, based on a common set of daily one-word prompts (you don’t have to use the prompts if you don’t want to). Each day’s word is arbitrary, but I wanted…

1965 Plymouth Fury III Wagon

I’ve been having a lot of fun with the toned tan paper lately. I’m a sucker for wagons, especially the very square, sharp edge wagons of the mid-sixties. Among them is the Fury III which looks great in all body styles, especially wagon. Like the bus, this one started off as a pencil sketch using…

1978 VW Westfalia

This bus is owned by my friend Derek – he fully restored it and uses it to tour the country. This project started with the intent to be a quick side-view sketch, but as I got in to it, it ended up with increasing detail. I picked toned tan paper to start on because I…

Ford V Ferrari

I don’t know about you, but I am JACKED about the trailer for the movie Ford V Ferrari coming out this November. To commemorate the Ford GT40, I made this tiny sketch of a MK1…yes, I know the LeMans winning car was an MKii and none of the three cars wore Gulf Livery, but it…
