1961 Morgan Drawings
These 1961 Morgan drawings made for a very cool project! These two drawings represent the before and after conditions of this beautiful car around its restoration. The blue version represents the car as it was before, and the yellow drawing represents the car now.
This was a challenging car to draw because Morgan used a lot of fine detail in the brightwork and body. I started with a basic line drawing using Micron pens on toned gray paper, and then rendered the car using Copic markers. The drawings are different sizes, so the level of detail required is different between the two.
One of the rewards of creating these drawings is education in history and in learning about details of the cars that you might not realize until you sketch them out. One thing I learned about Morgans is that they were all essentially built with whatever parts were available from the parts bin. Some have windshield wipers that point to the right, some point to the left. Some have mirrors near the windshield, others are mounted up on the fenders. Different cars have different trim pieces, and so on.
After the cars were rendered in marker, I used Posca white to add light reflections. These images show the dramatic effect.
The updated restored car wears wire spoke wheels. Wires take a lot of patience. To get it right, it’s important to actually count the wires and orientation of the pattern. On most wire wheels I’ve drawn so far, there are two layers of depth with wires pointing in two different directions, and they cross.
I love the chrome grille on this car and how it reflects light.
Finally, I framed these 1961 Morgan drawings in 8×10 and 11×14 for the clients! I hope they love them. Thank you Ron and Donna for sharing your beautiful Morgan with me!
