1940 Ford Kustom Drawing
The 1939 – 1940 Ford is one of my favorite automotive designs, and I’ve drawn several of them. It’s just amazing to me how Ford created such a unique and aggressive car and only used it for two years. The other 1940 Ford drawings I’ve made were either stock or very mildly customized, so I opted to make a radical 1940 Ford Kustom drawing to add a little flavor on this one.
I started with just a rough pencil sketch on white paper. I wanted to do a 3/4 front view looking up on this one so I exaggerated the chop line on the roof to make the perspective look extra forced.
The headlights are slightly frenched into the fenders and the front pan is rolled back to allow for a bumper delete. Once I was happy with the perspective in the rough sketch, I lined the drawing with Micron 005.
I retraced the drawing with heavier weight Micron 05 to add some depth to the drawing.
Next, I filled in the shadow, tires, and interior with full-black Sharpie marker.
I added some reflective detail in the chrome hubcap and headlight buckets. I wanted to give the illusion that the hubcap was a big fat protruding moon cap. The grille was a challenge because the bars curve and bend down along the profile of the grille.
Here’s where I lost myself and forgot to take good progress pictures of my 1940 Ford Kustom drawing. I used three different Copic green markers to render the body. It didn’t look like it had enough contrast to me, so I added extra bold black sweeps throughout the body. I used Posca white to add light reflections to the grille, chrome trim strip and windshield.
Finally, I added a thin line box behind the car as a fancy design touch with some atomic starbursts in pink.
This drawing will be framed and available for sale at shows this summer!
