1974 Roadrunner Drawing
In 1979 when the hit TV series The Dukes of Hazzard came out with their first season, Daisy drove a 1973 / 1974 Plymouth Roadrunner. Toward the end of the season, the producers decided to have Bo drive the car off a cliff reportedly because they were afraid the car would compete too much with the General Lee. There’s no touching a 1969 Charger in my book, but the Roadrunner is definitely cool. The Dukes is one of my favorite shows even to this day, so here’s a 1974 Roadrunner drawing.
I wanted to challenge myself on this one with the perspective. The 3/4 front view looking from the top down is extra complex and tough to get right. It took me a couple redraws to get the perspective right in the rough sketch.
Once the sketch looked right, I lined the drawing with Micron pen. The grille has some unexpected complexity in the concave-convex curvature changes.
I added some thicker line weight in certain areas to add some depth to the 1974 Roadrunner drawing.
Next, I used Copic markers to render the body and trim.
Finally, I used Posca white to accentuate the shiny light reflections.
I did scan and copy the line drawing in order to be able to play around with different rendering methods. I also made a version using Sharpie markers in my black and white style.
Which version do you like better?
