1969 Roadrunner Drawing
Last week, I introduced some Chevy muscle car prints that I’m excited to be making for shows this summer. Last year, one of the most requested car drawings was interestingly for Plymouth Roadrunners, which I had none of. This year, I’ve made this large black and white 1969 Roadrunner Drawing print on card stock to take to shows for any Mopar and Roadrunner fans.
The 1968, 1969, and 1970 Plymouth Roadrunners are some of the most iconic and aggressive muscle cars of the muscle car era. One feature of these cars that I find particularly cool is the no-frills styling and dress. There is no fluff in these cars – power nothing, stamped steel wheels, and a ton of torque.
Consider how different that is from today’s new cars: Any new car on the lot is packed with technology, electrical systems, and screens. Some of the new electric vehicles even have giant tablets in the center of the dash. It seems driving is no longer about driving, but rather creature comfort and entertainment.
I started the 1969 Roadrunner drawing with a rough pencil sketch on white paper. This is one of my favorite perspectives: It’s a simple side view, but tilted slightly down from above the car so you’re able to see part of the hood and trunk. It gives the drawing depth and a 3D appearance.
Next, I lined the drawing with Micron pens. At this point, I added the classic 1960s Mopar “M” logo behind the car to give an extra stylistic feature.
Finally, I filled in the shaded parts of the drawing with Sharpie. There is a significant designed body crease on both the front and rear fenders. The stamped wheels and tires have some shading, as well as the shadow underneath.
I’m excited to have this available as a print – it’ll be available on my shop page, as well as in-person at shows this summer.
