AMC Marlin Drawing
This AMC Marlin drawing was a fun project! I don’t see a lot of Marlins out and at car shows, and so when I was asked to make this Marlin drawing, I was excited to do something a little different.
I started with a rough pencil sketch on gray paper. From there, I lined the drawing with Micron 005, the extra-fine pen. Many people cite the AMC Javelin as the premier muscle car from AMC, but I think the long swooping fastback design and aggressive styling of the Marlin are equally cool.
Next, I used a heavier line weight Micron pen to add some atmospheric perspective and pop the drawing off the page.
Once the line work was done, I used Copic grays to render the chrome, tires, shadow, and interior of the car. I think the chrome strip along the fin on the rear fenders is particularly cool. Copic dark reds fill in the taillights. I was able to use the fine Micron pen to detail the marlin logo set in the badge on the rear. I also used light blue to reflect the sky in the bumper and marlin badge.
The body is white, so I used white charcoal to fill in the brighter portions. The white body on the gray paper really lifts the car off the page. I used light Copic grays to run over the parts of the body that are shaded a little darker. I used just a little bit of Posca white paint to accentuate some of the shiny reflections.
Finally, I framed and matted the AMC Marlin drawing in 8×10. I think the white body is really set off by the white mat, here.
Thank you Kevin & June for the opportunity to draw this beautiful AMC Marlin for you! I hope you enjoy it!
