1949 Chevy Drawing
This past weekend, I made this 1949 Chevy Drawing, this one being a Styleline DeLuxe model. I’ve made quite a few color-rendered marker-on-white paper sketches lately, so here’s a fresh contrasty drawing on toned gray.
I started with a rough pencil sketch on toned gray paper.
Next, I retraced with Micron 02, and layered in thicker 03 and 05 to add perspective.
Before adding in marker tones, I used Micron 01 to outline the shaded zones in the body paint.
At this point, the line work was complete, and I started in with the markers. I laid in all the black areas with Sharpie and used Copic neutral grays for the chrome.
I decided to make the wheels red. This is the first black & white drawing I’ve made with colored wheels. I think the contrast looks cool on this 1949 Chevy Drawing!
Next, I used white charcoal pencil to lay in some white reflection in the windows and chrome.
Finally, I used Posca white to draw in the white reflections in the body.
The Posca white was also used to draw in the pointed light reflections in the wheels, tires, and around the body work. I separated the gray bottom section of the body and the black top-mid sections of the body with additional white to give a nearly chrome body illusion.
I think the extreme contrast between white and black gives some depth and dimension to the flat 2D side profile view.
