1969 Mustang Drawing

1969 Mustang Drawing

I just finished up three commission pieces over the last month, and they were all extra large drawings – the largest I’ve done so far, and some of my most proud work! I had one 14×18 frame left over and decided it would be fun to use it for a drawing I’ve been thinking about doing for awhile – a 1969 Mustang Drawing.

1969 Mustang Final

I used Roadkill’s Disgustang 1969 Mach 1 for a visual guide, mostly because I really love the Mickey Thompson steel wheels. First, I started with a rough pencil sketch on oversized toned gray paper.

This perspective is one of my favorites – I love the 3/4-front view from ground level looking up at the car – I think it makes it look larger. Once the proportions were right, I re-traced with Micron 01. The pencil sketch is rough and exactly that – a sketch. The pen work needs to be clean, so the ship curves come in to play here.

Next, I added heavier-weight line work with Micron 03, 05, and 08, which gives a sense of depth.

I chose to use the black-and-white shading method on this drawing, and I usually do black first. I’ll typically use Micron 08 or 1 for smaller areas, and Sharpie for larger spaces.

The last portion is adding the white areas, which I do with Posca white paint pens. I have a variety of sizes for different areas.

Finally, I trimmed and framed the drawing in 14×18.

I really love this 1969 Mustang Drawing and this style – it’s definitely cleaner than this 1969 Boss 429 drawing I made a couple years ago!

  1. […] Last week’s 1969 Mustang drawing had me really admiring the beauty of that design – it’s aggressive yet sporty. The lines in the roof, side windows, fenders and grille remind me of angry eyebrows. This week, I decided to make another 1969 Mach 1 drawing, this time in color. […]
