Inktober, Part 4

Inktober, Part 4

I missed two days this week, so I’ll have to go back and pick those up in November. Anyway, here is my fourth installment of Inktober drawings.

Day 12: Slippery

Inktober Slippery

For “Slippery,” I chose to draw the SoCal Streamliner, the first 200-mph car built in the 1950s. I love the nearly steampunk feel to this utilitarian beast – the hand-formed body panels are riveted together to create a single aerodynamic shape to cut through the air.

Day 13: Dune

Inktober Dune

Dune buggy seemed pretty clear, but how about a kustom kulture-vibed Meyers Manx? The Meyers Manx has a pulp culture following and is a classic in its own right. This one has stamped steel wheels (I would chrome theme) on white wall tires and a hot rod scallop on the lower portion of the tub.

Day 14: Armor

Inktober Armor

For “Armor,” I drew this WWII-era M3a1 half track. This armored truck was used to carry American troops and Allies across rough battle-laden terrain.

Day 16: Rocket

Inktober Rocket

At first, I was going to draw an Oldsmobile rocket 88, but then I switched gears (pun intended) and chose to draw the Thomas Rocket Car. This car was designed by Charles Thomas in 1938 as part of his thesis project at General Motors Institute of Technology (now Kettering University, my alma mater) in Flint, MI. The streamlined design was purportedly too avant-garde for its time and that type of styling wasn’t widely accepted until the next decade.

Day 17: Storm

Inktober Storm

One of my favorite films is Twister, starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. As a kid, I watched that movie over and over. The coolest vehicle by far in that movie is Jo’s (Helen Hunt) 1982 Jeep J10 pick up. At the time of the film’s making, this truck would have just been an old dusty 14-year old beater truck, but now it’s a classic. Dorothy is riding in the back.

That’s all for Inktober, Part 4. Stay tuned for Part 5 coming soon!
