Pencil vs Ink Study

Pencil vs Ink Study

I drew this Graham 97 Sharknose this weekend in pencil, and decided to go back over it with ink to see the differences in this pencil vs ink study.

Ink drawing

It’s important to explore and experiment with art in order to understand what different inputs do. This pencil vs ink study shows the effects of both mediums.

The final drawing with ink is much more crisp and contrasts more with the white and the paper. The shadow under the car, which was filled in with Sharpie, is much darker, and the outlines around the car’s surfaces are sharper. I also re-applied the white to make that contrast further with the black, and added a Copic marker N3 background splotch to pop the car off the page.

The pencil is a little more classic and understated. It looks a little more vintage than the ink version, which is cool, but I think I prefer the sharp contrast of the ink more.

Which do you like better? The pencil or the ink?
