1960 Chevy Drawing
My first piece of art this week is a 1960 Chevy drawing, black and white on toned gray paper.
I wanted to do something with fins and the ’59 Impala is the most iconic finned car, in my opinion (outside of maybe the ’59 Cad). The 1960 kept the fins and body but changed the grille slightly, and it’s not as well-remembered. Usually you see these cars in original condition or built as lowriders or mild customs, so I decided to be a little different and make mine a mild stock car.
This car is actually a Biscayne trim level – the lowest base version – and has a high-rake front end with negative camber for running on dirt. The lower valence under the bumper has been removed, and a skid plate added in its place. The car is riding on steelie wheels and sports #7, which I use for all my race cars.
Here’s the rough pencil sketch. The reference photo I used was actually a four-door version in Impala trim, so I had to shorten the roof line and adjust the door position accordingly.
Next, I completed the line work using Micron pens. I went a little heavier this time than I normally do to really make the car pop off the page.
Next, I filled in the dark shading with Micron 08, 1, and Sharpie. I could have stopped here – I think this looks pretty cool!
Finally, I finished the 1960 Chevy drawing with Posca White paint pen to give the contrast to the black pen.
I think full-size race cars are cool. Similar to how the black and white in these drawings contrast against each other, the ideas of racing and full size cars and in opposition. Race cars traditionally are supposed to be small and lightweight, so to do something entirely different is fun.
