1953 Chevy Bel Air Drawing
Another awesome commission request that came across this week for this 1953 Chevy Bel Air drawing.
This was a really fun project – especially because the early 1950s Chevys are among my favorite styling automobiles.
I started with toned tan paper and laid out a grid to center the car.
Next, I roughed in the wheels using a circle template.
After the wheels are roughed in, I used ship curves to lay the body lines down. The early 1950s cars generally have more severe curves than later cars.
Once everything was roughed in position, I finished the rough pencil sketch.
Once I felt confident in the proportions, I started the line work with Micron 01. The ink really gives starts to give depth to the drawing.
To add even more depth with atmospheric perspective, I used Micron 03 & 05 to distinguish some of the trim from the body.
I tried something a little different this time – I used black pen to complete some of the darker shading, rather than gray markers. If this one were for me, I could have stopped here because I think this looks awesome…
…But alas, let’s add some color.
There are three different shades of tan in the body, and three different shades of brown in the trim.
Finally, I used Posca White paint pen to accent the shiny reflections in the bumpers, trim, and wheel covers.
And lastly, here is the drawing framed in 11×14:
Awesome car, Charlie! Thank you for letting me capture your 1953 Chevy Bel Air in this drawing!
