First Sketch of 2020!

Happy New Year! This is my first sketch of the new year – a 1950 Ford. The 1949-51 Shoebox Ford is one of my favorite designs – it’s very simple and understated, yet shows the start of the space age-inspired design influence of the 1950s.

This photo shows the rough sketch in pencil. I like to start with the wheel closest to the viewer – in this case, the front left wheel. From there, I draw my vanishing points and horizon. These lines construct the perspective around which the basic boxes can be drawn.
The bullet nose was a challenge.

I used Micron 005 pen to trace over the pencil once I had the proportions right.

I always forget to take photos of this step because this is where I really have fun. This photo shows the marker layering, starting from lightest colors and shading over with darker moving one value at a time. I thought red wheels would be a fun touch.
Here’s to a fun 2020!
