One Year Anniversary Corolla

One Year Anniversary Corolla

May is my one-year anniversary of making marker sketches – I started in May of 2018 with an old Toyota Corolla and some cheap Artist Loft grays.

I had been planning for awhile to do a one-year anniversary comparison of the same car to show off how I’ve improved, change in techniques, how I’ve started using colors, etc.

Truth is, I felt obligated to do this for the sake of content, or whatever. I really dreaded it – my heart wasn’t in this one and I think it shows in the quality. The line work is sloppy. The marker strokes are sloppy. The wheels are undefined. The shadow under the car looks like a flying carpet. It’s garbage.

It taught me a lesson: “they” (whoever they are…) say to practice practice practice! And you should in order to improve. But, when you find an escape or a passion, be careful with it. It’s delicate – be gentle. If you immediately productionize it, monetize it, social media the crap out of it, content, content, content, it burns out like a job of tedium. Use caution – keep it refreshing and stimulating. Have fun.

And so I will. So…what will I draw next? I saw a ’70 Hemi Roadrunner on the way home from work today…
