Dart Vader
Yesterday I came across a photo of a Dodge Dart aptly named Dart Vader, built by Alloy Motors for the 2015 Sema show. I thought it would be an interesting experiment to draw it from a photo where the light source (sunset) is behind the car, creating a deep shadow in the front. This is traditionally an artistic “no-no,” but I think emphasizes the car’s character here. I really like how it takes a second to figure out what kind of car it is. It’s mysterious.
This car was sketched out with pencil on Canson marker paper, filled in with Copic markers and outlined with black ink pen. The cool thing about gloss black cars is that they are like mirrors – they reflect whatever colors are nearby. In this case, there is a mix of tans, yellows, and blue from the sky reflected in the side of the car.
